NHS Careers has a new website for recent graduates and undergraduates www.whatcanidowithmydegree.nhs.uk – which guides students through the myriad of careers in the health service based on their degree. Research with undergraduates suggests there are many misconceptions about careers in the NHS, such as staff are badly paid and only employs clinical staff such as doctors and nurses. The website shatters these myths while giving an honest appraisal of working in the NHS.
There are over 350 different careers in the NHS and there is one for every graduate – whatever their degree. It also aims to supports students in the important transition from education to work and help them kick start their career in healthcare. On the website you can find out about real life graduates working in the NHS who talk about their NHS careers and there is a link to thousands of vacancies at the NHS Jobs website.
For the NHS a typical day includes:
- Over 835,000 people visiting their GP practice or practice nurse
- Almost 50,000 people visiting accident and emergency departments
- 49,000 outpatient consultations
- 94,000 people admitted to hospital as an emergency admission
- 36,000 people in hospital for planned treatment
- 28,000 sight tests being carried out
- 18,000 calls to NHS Direct
