‘Being a teacher is a privilege; it allows you to make a difference, however small or large, to the lives of young individuals who are our future.’
Syra was awarded her PGCE in Secondary Mathematics at the University of Bath in has just completed her NQT year in a local school.
Although I have spent most of my life in the UK I was actually born in Mombasa, Kenya. Both of my parents were also born in Kenya and they emigrated to the UK when I was very young and settled in Cardiff.
I went to the University of Bath to study mathematics and spent four wonderful years there. After graduation the question then was, what next? To be truthful, I wasn’t too sure, all I knew was that it had to be maths related and I spent several years working for an investment management firm in the city. I then decided I needed a change of career and am now a qualified mathematics teacher!
Teaching is something that I had been considering for a number of years. I enjoy working with children and I absolutely love maths and get great pleasure in teaching it. What other job allows you to do the subject you adore all day long! Being a teacher is a privilege; it allows you to make a difference, however small or large, to the lives of young individuals who are our future.
I chose the University of Bath to do my PGCE because Bath is a vibrant city to live in and the university is ranked highly for its PGCE. I would definitely recommend it to anyone considering where to do their PGCE; there is a great atmosphere on the course and all the staff are very helpful and supportive.
I am currently working in the same school in which I trained during my PGCE. The school employs a number of staff who are also University of Bath PGCE graduates, which is a testament to the quality of teaching that Bath offers. I have a very good relationship with pupils and other members of staff who are very supportive and offer invaluable advice in times of need! All in all, my experience training and working in Wiltshire has been nothing but positive and enriching.
